In What we are told not to talk about Nemko Ali faces the reality that our bodies must not just be hidden but must not be spoken about. That we must not speak openly about things that make others (men) uncomfortable. I have always known more about men’s bodies than my own. We are not taught about women’s bodies in the same way, they are not as visible as men’s bodies, they are not as studied as men’s bodies, they are not as believed or taken as seriously as men’s bodies. All we have is an underground series of whispers between trusted women that we can hopefully use to help us live more comfortably. It is unfair and I am not sure men are even aware of the way in which women’s bodies and realities are hidden from society to the point where most women have felt there is something wrong but have been dismissed for years. We live as objects without access to our own object self. We are not even looked after as well as pets. Women’s bodies are secret and shameful.
